MVTV Wireless Connects with Rural Customers via Social Media
Sometimes it seems like rural Minnesota is the last to get the newest technology. But with progressive organizations such as MVTV Wireless, people in central and southwest Minnesota can access broadband internet and be connected for very little cost. Now with their new website, blog and social media presence, more people in Minnesota are aware of their internet service options.
MVTV is a nonprofit, member-owned corporation, founded in 1960, made up of members who pay a one-time fee of $50 per household. MVTV’s mission is to bring High Speed Broadband Wireless Internet Service to un-served and underserved areas in central and southwest Minnesota.
Being an organization who offers a technology service, MVTV knew it was important for their online presence to be more professional and engaging. Dan Richter, the President of MVTV since 1988, knew a change had to be made, “MVTV needed a more up-to-date look on our website and the ability to connect to our current and potential customers thru Facebook and Twitter. MVTV was expanding into new geographical areas and we needed a way to communicate to our members regularly.”
Vivid Image developed a new WordPress website and blog for MVTV. The next step was to implement a social networking presence thru Facebook and Twitter. Vivid Image helped get MVTV started with social networking and blogging, and then trained the MVTV staff on how to keep it going. An important part of MVTV’s success today came from training with Beth Gasser and the rest of the Vivid Image staff. Dan notes, “Beth’s support and training was key in teaching us to handle our own social networking. She’s always willing to help by suggesting content to write about. Classes provided by VI have also helped with continuing the education process and allowing us to learn from other businesses in our situation.”
Although Dan and the staff at MVTV found the training and education to be very helpful, when asked what they liked best about working with Vivid Image, it was attitude that made Vivid Image stand out. Dan’s favorite part of working with Vivid Image is “The enthusiasm of the entire Vivid Image staff!”
The results of their website and social media campaign have impacted their business tremendously, from getting found to visual appeal and brand awareness. Dan remarks, “Our new website is more visual and easier to view and navigate. Customers often find us through SEO. Having the use of built-in contact forms also helps increase potential customers. We have seen an increase in customer awareness through the new website and social media campaigns.”
MVTV’s customers have raved about the new website because it keeps members informed about MVTV activity and other related information.Dan explains, “They love it! We steer many suppliers, current and potential customers to our website. It gives them all the information they need to know about our company.” Through the blog and social media, MVTV has also gained new customers and renewed interest. “We’ve heard from several customers that they found us on Facebook or Twitter. We are also getting comments on fun or informative blog posts. Our ‘guess this location’ aerial photos posted on Facebook are fairly popular with members. They like to see the views from our towers and guess what town the picture is of.”

Dan has a piece of advice for other small businesses and non-profits looking to improve their web or social media presence, “Do it sooner than later! Start the conversation now. Be the problem solver and anticipate customer’s needs in order to provide solutions.” He knows that social media is here to stay, and is a vital piece of online marketing for businesses in rural Minnesota. Dan explains, “You won’t be here long if you don’t get into social media and blogging! It’s important to connect with today’s ‘worldly’ customers.”
