Recently I attended a seminar on social media marketing and probably the best message I took away from the speaker’s advice is the very first message he shared with us. Always remember to answer the following question when you are marketing the products and/or services your business has to offer:
“What’s in it for ME?”
If you aren’t keeping the “WIIFM” motto in mind whether you are writing content for your website, blog post, or email marketing campaign, chances are you won’t keep the attention of your current or prospective customer for very long. There is so much information now to sort through that if all you are doing is answering questions about YOU without speaking to THEIR needs, your marketing messages can easily get ignored by your prospect or current customer.
So what are the questions you want to answer in your marketing messages? There are usually five of them:
- How will you/your product/service MAKE ME $$?
- How will you/it SAVE ME $$?
- How will you/it SAVE ME TIME?
- How will you/it SOLVE MY PROBLEMS?
- How will you/it MAKE ME HAPPY?
The next time you are crafting your next message to get the attention of new or current customers, if your message doesn’t answer at least one of the five, don’t expect a successful response! Rewrite it so you are clearly responding to WIIFM?
